This is the first day I've ever seen this site. I was with the 3rd from March till end November 66. I saw LT. Chris in Ft. Ord at the Hospital. He was just getting out. Told me they had found 22 different types of worms in his body and system. Planned to meet up, but never saw him again. Happy Holidays.

Ron, Great to see your e-mail. Glad you read the message. Will send e-mail direct to you. It is good to make contact with you guys after all these years. For years I could remember every day and every place we were, then it was the broader operations with particular memories, now it sometimes seems like a 100 years ago and other moments yesterday. Be in touch soon.

Mike Carmichael,Wow! Talk about a voice from the past? Sure, I remember those events, although I don't remember getting drunk. Of course, that might of been the problem, remembering! Ha.Ha. I thought some of us got back just as the movie ended so we wouldn't be missed but then the big surprise, empty positions! As for the that 1st Bong Son operation, I distinctly remember 9 KIAs lying there. Very sobering. And after knowing about the large battle the unit had been in November before we got there that the world now knows as the battle for LZ XRAY, Ia Drang, I figured I wouldn't make it past the next day when we were to be airlifted into the presnt ongoing battle. First Santo Domingo with the 82d now this! No way, I'm making it out alive. Yet, 42 years later here we are. LT Christensen ! Wasn't he the tall (6'6") Lt who took over the platoon the day before we were inserted into the 2nd battle for Bong Son in May '66? That was one brave LT! I remember him standing on the rice dike under fire directing the platoon. We started taking bets how long he'd make it because of his height made him such a target and him exposing himself as he did. At one point the RTO (A Spanish fellow,I don't remember his name) was lying behind me and took a bullet in the back through the radio. (He survived as I met him in the hospital in Japan) The Lt told me to take the radio and become the RTO. Smartass me says "Lt! A bullet went through it! It don't work! Why do I have to carry it?" He chewed me out and told me to carry the damn thing! Ha.Ha. But he was one of the best I've seen. I know after the battle we talked about putting him in for a Bronze Star but I was Medivac out of country before anything became of it and when I got back he was already gone. I really hope he made it.

Harry Adams, remember we we first went to the field to that forward area and saw the dead bodies being brought in from the first Bong Son operation and you I got some strechers from the Graves Registration station to sleep on that last night before we joined the company in the field. Seeing those bodies was sobering. You and I with typical GI humor bet the "other guy" wouldn't make the full tour. Well, we both made it. I sure remember Clifcorn, I always look at his name on The Wall when I am in D.C. We had a lot of philosophical conversations and he humped a lot of ammo for me. Kid quit the seminary and joined the Army to find himself. Had never been laid in his life and I knew him till I left in January '67 when you did. It always haunted me that the poor guy may never have had that pleasure before he got killed. Ran into Kelly in the hospital at Ft. Bragg, I was back in the 82nd, and he had been shot up in the north when Clifcorn got it. That's how I found out. Said the new Lt. (West Pointer)who joined us in December in Phan Thiet got it, too. Remeber we you, me, and Wiesgerber ducked the movie in the ARVN base in Phan Thiet and snuck off to the little store and drank horrible Suntory whiskey and ate hard boiled eggs with mamasam and papasan. And listened to that new Simon and Garfunkel album "Parsley, Sage Rosemary, & Thyme". That was an amazing experience considering what we had been doing in the last few months. Weisgerber, MR. Responsible, went back before it got too late and he could still walk. You and I kept at it till the wee hours and staggered back to the perimeter on LZ Betty. We walked back to our positions and NO ONE WAS THERE! We were dumbfounded and speechless (very rare occasion). My gear is gone, my M-60 is gone. The positions are empty, your squad is gone. Then that jeep drives up with those slit lights and the Lt. growls "get in". Off we go to join the company preparing for a dawn air assault. They said they'd deal with us later. My guys have gear and weapon. I saddle up, the choppers come in the dark, and were off. I sat in the door, like always, and was hoping I wouldn't fall out as I was still very drunk. The Arc Light strike hit the target area just as dawn broke. The dawn was beatiful and the rolling carpet of 500 lb. bombs was mesmerizing. I remember hopping out on the bombed out LZ thinking this will be a cakewalk. Nothing could survive that strike. The smell of all that HE kind of brought me around. I never forget the stupefied feeling coming back to our platoon position and having no platoon. That was very hard to process, would have been hard sober. It was like being abandoned by your family. We went everywhere together. Jenkins, great to see a picture of you, too. I wondered for years how you made out. I remember you and I talking one night towards the end of our tour that you said you wanted to be a D.C. cop when you got out of the Army. Did you do that? We first met in 1/505 at Bragg. David Hughes (A 1/7)and I had just arrived from Jump School and you were decent enough to drink a beer with cherries. One of the guys from your squad ended up in my company back at Bragg (A 2/504) It was Thomas, you remeber him, very good looking guy. Nearly got blown away that time our company was looking for some regimental headquartes in An Lao or Kim Son. Our platoon was working up a jungled ravine traversing up the ridge on the right side. I was back down the file, Thomas was on point and we ran into that Chinese .50. Thomas told me later that it opened up at five feet, he never saw it till it fired, and it missed him. We were all kind of pinned down. I remember that .50 snapping saplings a few feet above my head. Second platoon on the other side worked over and flanked that gun. We hauled that .50 back down to the little valley and a little while later a VC propaganda toupe walked into the company. There were women in the troupe. They were taken prisoner without a shot, if I remeber right. I'll never forget how big Thomas's eyes were when he told me .50 opening up on him when we got back down in the narrow valley. I think we all were part cats, because we all seemed to use up nine lives to get through that tour. Reagrds to all the guys in the pictures. And to "Flash" Lee (named by Archuleta) I remember you said a very funny thing one time. Some sergeant told you to do something and you said, "If they give me one more thing to think about, I won't be able to think about it till next Thursday." Hey, Lilly. I remember that night in Phan Thiet when those PAVN officers walked into your side of the perimeter and you blasted them with your 60. That was a nice haul of maps and documents if I remember correctly. You sure grew in that job and took to that gun. I always wondered how Lt. Christensen made out when he and Capt. Livingston went off to be advisors to the ARVN Airborne. He was a good platoon leader. Anybody know?

Hello - I am trying to locate any information or anyone who knew my brother, Roger L Pugh. 1st Air Cavalry, B Company, 1st Batallion,7th Cavalry, 3rd Brigade. He was killed in action in Hung Long, An Lo Valley on 4/8/67. I was 1.5 years old when he was killed and I am trying to learn a little more about him and what he experienced during his time (began in 11/66). Any help would be appreciated. Thank you

Wow! Like a blast into the past, seeing everyone again. I was happy to see familiar faces and sad at the same time knowing now that Clifcorn and Tiefenthaler were KIA in '67 after I left in Jan '67.I believe Pugh also was KIA among others. All great guys. As for me I wound up back in the An Lao on my 3rd tour in '70 (I did 2 with the a recon unit with the 173rd Airborne Bde.) Lost 2 great guys from my team on my last mission in that blasted valley. Stayed on in the reserves/national guard making Desert Storm,Kosovo,Bosnia and finally went in with the invasion of Iraq and a 2nd tour there to boot last year.WE lost a few guys and a gal. although none were in my immediate unit it still hurt. War still sucks no matter where. Anyway, great work,Bob. I've got some pictures you probably could add of some of the guys from '66 but will have to wait for my son in law to come up from N.C. to show me how.

I was more than surprise to see the picture of myself on the net. Also, I was plesantly surprise to see pictures of Jurjuvic, Streblow, Huss (I thought the name was Huff) and Rhames, spelled Rhimes in the picture featuring him. They were all members of my squad from B Co, 3rd plt. They were great soldiers, and I was priveledge to lead such men. I have often thought of them and wondered how they are doing today. By the way, Rhames and I both live in Columbia, SC and see each other, mostly at the VA Hospital, frequently. Finally, it was good to see pictures of several other people that I knew and were closely associated with.
