Picture 5 of 14 was taken at An Khe in late March 1968. The guys in the picture are part of a group of about 10 young officers that were assigned to the 1st Cav at the same time. Most of us went through Jungle School in Panama together in early March 1968.The individual on the left is Bill Schrader who went to A, 2/12 Cav. The last time I saw Doug was in late April 1968 as our units were passing on Highway 1 outside of Camp Evens ans we had a short conversation. He was a good guy and I think of him every May 4th.

CPT Stevens took the "B" Co command after the KIA of CPT Barber. CPT Stevens and 1LT Fournet came to the Co. at almost the same time. They both took part in the Khe Sanh Operation, and also participated in Ashau Valley. On or about May 2nd the Company was asending the hill (mountain) that would claim 1LT Fournet's life on the 4th of May. The 2nd Platoon (Fournet's) and my squad (the 2nd) had point...to re-engage the enemy that had more than roughly handled the 3rd Platoon the day previous. Upon my point element (Doug Chappell and myself) making contact with the entrenched NVA positions, a right oblique support fire was opened up from our company perimeter about 100 yds to our left rear...to which the NVA responded with all due vigor...it was during this exchange of gunfire tha t CPT Stevens was WIA with a round to his leg...I have always thought that our loss of his most competant command style was a major factor in the poor deployment of Co "B" for the remainder of the action in the Ashau Valley Campaign. Respectfully submitted.

To all of those who served in the 1st.Cav in Vietnam over the years, I hope that your suffering is over and that your years since Vietnam have been plentiful and full of meaning. To those who still carry around the anguish of those years, know that you are not alone in your fight for peace, life and a sense of belonging.
